About Paphos

The Pafos District surrounds the coastal town of Pafos, once the ancient capital of Cyprus and today amongst the island's most popular tourist resorts. Its age old history and archaeological treasures have merited the towns naming as a world heritage site by UNESCO.

The town itself has two main areas, Kato Pafos (lower Pafos) and Pano Pafos (upper Pafos). Kato Pafos is best known for its mediaeval fort; old fishing harbour; and sea-front promenade and is highly popular with tourists and locals alike! There are numerous sandy beaches here, along with excellent restaurants and entertainment facilities. Cultural events ranging from operas to art exhibitions and concerts regularly take place here. Pano Pafos encircles the colourful Old Market, and is brimming with modern shops and boutiques.

Coral Bay

11 kilometres (15 minutes drive) to the north of Paphos and 3 kilometres below the friendly, hillside village of Peyia is Coral Bay, the best natural beach in the area. This is an established resort with many villas set apart from one another above a wide curve of dark golden sand. The summer heat is often tempered by a gentle breeze, the sea has a shallow margin where children may play safely and, in the busier months, water sports on offer include pedaloes, water skiing, banana boats, wetbikes and windsurfing.

Close by the Bay you will find four large hotels, banks, minimarkets for provisions and souvenirs, bars, restaurants and other shops and, for casual alfresco meals, a couple of tavernas/snack bars overlooking the sea and a large restaurant in the next bay which is open during the day. More tavernas and local shops are a short drive away. A perfect location for a casual seaside holiday, this is also an excellent base for touring the Paphos area, with all it has to offer. European Blue Flag beach.

Peyia

A very large, almost overwhelmingly friendly village, now designated a town with its own municipality, and tucked away in the hills about 3.5kms from Coral Bay and 15kms from Paphos. There are several coffee shops, grocers and heartily welcoming tavernas which provide simple but excellent food (if you ask in advance they will prepare special dishes or buy fresh fish for you). A picturesque drive north along winding roads through the Peyia forest and pretty villages brings you to the Akamas peninsula and Latchi's beaches, giving the possibility of countless memorable days out

Pafos (Paphos), renowned for its archaeological treasures, Pafos the legendary birthplace of Aphrodite, the goddess of love and beauty. Situated on the South-West coast of the island and sheltered from the north by the Troodos mountains, Pafos enjoys the healthiest year round climate in the Mediterranean.

The countryside is serenely beautiful throughout the year with fertile plains, citrus fruit plantations, rocky coves, sandy beaches and crystal-clear waters.

Pafos harbour with its ancient castle, its mosaics depicting Dionysos the God of wine, beautiful churches and old monasteries antiquities, has prompted UNESCO to include Pafos in its world cultural heritage list.

Today, Pafos is not only known for its marvelous archaeological treasures and ancient legends, but as a thriving coastal city. The authorities have invested heavily in irrigation dams and water distribution works, road infrastructure and the development of Pafos International Airport whilst private initiatives have concentrated on hotels, apartments and villa developments and comprehensive entertainment facilities.
